The Letters of Your Name

When decoding your own name, it's important to realize that in Numerology, each letter in your name has a corresponding number, and that the placement of each letter determines the kind of influence that letter (and its numerological meaning) has on you. To simplify things, we will refer to letters and their numerological meaning rather than discuss the precise numbers they translate into.

The Cornerstone

First, let's look at the Cornerstone. This is the first letter of your name. It provides general insight about your essential personality, and it has a lot to say about your approach to life's speed bumps and open doors. In other words: your Cornerstone is all about how you approach both difficulties and upswings.

The Capstone

The Capstone is the last letter of your name, and, fittingly, it demonstrates your ability to see projects and ideas through to the end. This translates into your "finishing" number. When you look at your Cornerstone and Capstone -- the letters that "bookend" your name -- you can determine how easy it is for you to start and stop important processes and projects. It answers questions like: Are you a shaker and a mover? Are you a little bit flakey?

The Heart's Desire
Now look to the first vowel of your first name -- this letter gets to your core. This is what we call the Heart's Desire. Think of the deepest goals, urges and dreams that drive you in all you do -- this is the letter that represents them. But this is a secretive letter, because few people wear what it really is they want on their sleeve. This first vowel in your name indicates something that only your closest friends and trusted families might know about you ... and it's also a very telling "window" to your soul!

You might know someone who for whatever reason changed the first vowel in their name. Although this is rare, it indicates a person who is uncomfortable with who they really are, at their core.

From A to Z

Here is an alphabetic list to understand your name from Cornerstone to First Vowel to Capstone. You can decode your own name by focusing on these three things. Here's an example: let's say your name is Anna. With "A" as your Cornerstone Letter, you are ambitious about starting new endeavors. With "A" as your First Vowel Letter, you might hide this ambition -- perhaps you are the quiet creative type. With "A" as your Capstone Letter, you push this motivation through to the end, seeing projects to their completion.

The Meaning of "A" in Your Name
You are your own person: ambitious and freethinking. You do not change your mind under someone else's pressure. A natural leader, you want to be in charge and need to have a purpose. You have courage, but make sure you're also flexible and take other people's ideas seriously.

The Meaning of "B" in Your Name
You are sensitive and a bit of an introvert, but still manage to be personable and compassionate. You are all about peace -- you need it in order to be happy. Although you are very loyal, make sure to keep an open mind and think for yourself more often.

The Meaning of "C" in Your Name
You wear your heart on your sleeve -- lucky, since you have a strong instinct about matters of the heart. You express yourself clearly and are also witty -- a "life of the party" sort. You are also very outspoken and upbeat.

The Meaning of "D" in Your Name
You are grounded and pragmatic. You have great systems in place for getting things done, which is great, because your sense of determination is strong. Be careful not to be too stubborn, because at your best, you shine under pressure and can get things done fast.

The Meaning of "E" in Your Name
You are freedom-loving, sensual and enthusiastic. You believe strongly in falling in love … in fact, you may do it quite often! You are outgoing and the life of the party, but you are also very keen and a hard one to fool. You can see a situation from many different sides.

The Meaning of "F" in Your Name
You are nurturing: both responsible and a good host, self-sacrificing and very easy to get along with. Your warmth shows in how easily you're able to take on other people's pain. Be careful not to stick your nose in or interfere in situations where you're not welcome, and try not to let other people's problems drag you down.

The Meaning of "G" in Your Name
You are an intellectually active person with loads of drive and the ability to make things happen. You are a visionary, and this could benefit you financially down the line. You think on your feet, even though you prefer to be very systematic. You may even feel psychic sometimes.

The Meaning of "H" in Your Name
You are a visionary, but you also tend to make a lot of money and lose it fast. In the long-run, however, you will probably be fine -- your creativity will serve you well. You think from the gut and might prefer to be alone. Fight any doubts you might have about yourself and spend plenty of time outdoors!

The Meaning of "I" in Your Name
You are a compassionate person who feels things deeply. It makes sense, then, that you are also artsy and creative, with a great eye for everything from fashion to composition. Make sure you stick close to projects and have direction -- otherwise you might suffer from anxiety. Balance is key.

The Meaning of "J" in Your Name
In this specific case, "J" is for justice. You are all about fairness and balancing the scales. You make an exemplary friend and try hard to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable. Make sure to motivate yourself enough to tap into natural talents.

The Meaning of "K" in Your Name
You are all about enlightenment. Both deeply-feeling and artistic, you are also motivated and rely heavily on your gut to make decisions. You are also a force to be reckoned with. Be careful of anxiety and hesitation, because you tend to be high-strung.

The Meaning of "L" in Your Name
You are very heady, and tend to over think rather than experience life. Do not allow this quality to make you indecisive. You are also very honest and tolerant, generous and kind-hearted. Fond of travel, you should look out for missteps or clumsiness during times of high anxiety. Seek balance.

The Meaning of "M" in Your Name
You are a workaholic! A high-energy workhorse, you don't need much sleep and are very healthy. You also really like to be a homebody, however, and need a steady financial base in order to feel secure. Also make sure your drive doesn't make you impatient with other people.

The Meaning of "N" in Your Name
You are a "think outside the box" kind of person -- creative and original. You are also strong-willed with the opinions to match. You are systematic about your life, documenting experiences in diary form, and might have your share of romantic "entanglements."

The Meaning of "O" in Your Name
You know where the moral high ground is, and you always take it. That's because your spiritual beliefs are as strong as your will. You like boundaries, laws and rules, but are also sensitive and feel things very deeply. Jealousy might be a problem for you. Be careful not to brood or be too suspicious.

The Meaning of "P" in Your Name
You are very intellectual and have a broad base of knowledge. People get great first impressions from you, but you can also seem distant. Although you have great "walking around sense," you can be extremely impatient. Make sure to let go, and to be more generous with your time.

The Meaning of "Q" in Your Name
You are a money magnet, but your instability can lead to financial downturns. You are a natural-born leader with a great power to persuade, although on a personal level, you're a tough nut to crack. People find you mysterious and may gossip frequently about you. Luckily, you speak your mind and you speak it eloquently.

The Meaning of "R" in Your Name
You feel things strongly and your rich, intense inner life emanates outward. You also have an excellent work ethic and can do your job with high amounts of energy. Make sure to keep a balance and to work well with others, even though you also have a kind nature.

The Meaning of "S" in Your Name
You are a real charmer. With a sense of warmth and devotion, you also feel things deeply -- this can lead to overly dramatic reactions and an intense inner life. Make sure you carefully consider every decision, and take care to whether your many emotional ups and downs.

The Meaning of "T" in Your Name
You like life in the fast lane. Remind yourself to slow down, because you are often taking on new and exciting projects. You're also assertive -- even aggressive -- in your personal relationships. Keep your feelings and outward appearance in check, and don't get too sensitive.

The Meaning of "U" in Your Name
You have a give-and-take kind of life. You might gain a lot, only to lose it, but will always break even. Teach yourself to think faster on your feet and then commit wholeheartedly to whatever project you're involved with. Tap into your instinct and creativity, as well as your impeccable sense of timing and luck! Also, you are naturally predisposed to be glamorous -- play it up!

The Meaning of "V" in Your Name
You are a seer -- you have great intuition. Sometimes you may even feel psychic. But be careful -- with a strong imagination, it may be hard to separate fact from fiction. You have lofty goals and the will to bring them into reality. Use your efficiency, but be careful not to be too eccentric -- that is a danger. Also beware your own unpredictability and possessiveness.

The Meaning of "W" in Your Name
You think from the gut and you have a great sense of purpose. You are also an active person -- mentally and literally: you like to be involved in as many activities as possible. Your charisma means you surround yourself with interesting people, because you stimulate excellent conversation. Try not to put things off, and take full advantage of your own creative.

The Meaning of "X" in Your Name
You are a creative, sensual person who engages with people easily and soaks up information like a sponge. Be careful that this enthusiasm and passion doesn't make you too passionate in sexual matters. You can also be moody and have to be careful to avoid addictions.

The Meaning of "Y" in Your Name
You are freedom-loving and like to break rules and push the envelope. Your ambition and courage make you naturally independent, even though you come across as reserved. You are stylish. Be careful not to be too slow in making decisions -- trust your natural gift of intuition!

The Meaning of "Z" in Your Name
You are naturally upbeat and charismatic. You always walk on the sunny side of the street, so to say, but also have high standards. You balance this out with common sense and understanding -- compassion is a strong suit of yours. You are wise and quick to think on your feet, but be careful not to be impatient or impulsive.

Language and Numerology

The language of numbers is universal -- not only is it rooted in mathematics and science, but it has a greater spiritual meaning as well. In this way, the power of numbers transcends spoken language. Numbers are very objective -- their immediate meaning is clear, and they are the language of science. To most people, there isn't any particular emotional meaning attached to numbers. Numbers are also perfect for communicating dense or abstract ideas.

But numbers are also like highly scientific tools that get to the essence of the words and names we use. Even though it's obvious to say that words have meaning, they truly do -- something even deeper than we might first catch. Each word and name has an almost subliminal feeling and soul. Numerology can get to the heart of this. To see just how Numerology reveals the deeper meaning of words, we'll look at some important (and basic) names -- for emotions, for everyday objects and for creatures.

Love

"Love"'s Expression Number is 9, the humanitarian sign that shows love's universal nature. Qualities associated with the number 9 include generosity and compassion -- this is a number that encourages personal sacrifice for the sake of others. 9 is healing, and this unconditional number also encourages gentle teaching.

"Love"'s Heart's Desire Number is 11 -- in this sense, 11 is sensitive and has a great sense of intuition. 11 seeks harmony and spiritual connection with a higher power. Numerology experts often call 11 "the Channel" or "the Illuminator." With a Personality Number of 7, "love" shows a need for self-knowledge and great sensitivity. 7 also shows that "love" is naturally wise.

Hate

"Love"'s opposite, "hate," has a Karmic Debt Number as its Expression Number (16/7). This means that it attracts painful lessons and is inherently destructive. This Karmic Debt Number shows that this word and all associated with it is isolated, an outcast. That's because 16/7 is a frigid number that is very intellectual and also extremely unfeeling. This number shows that "hate" has no patience for emotional matters.

"Hate"'s Heart's Desire Number is 6, showing that it has a powerful emotional impact on those around it. Every number has a light and dark side, and the dark side of 6 is an overwhelming need for control. After all, the concept of hate is that it fixates and tries to stamp out the object of its obsession. With a Personality Number of 1, "hate" embodies the dark sides of 1 by being insensitive and aggressive, selfish and unwilling to compromise. This is why "hate" is so often associated with isolation. Simply put, 1 keeps this word from seeing beyond the negativity and having any kind of tolerance.

Karma and Numerology

Numerology is based on the ancient idea that each of us is a spiritual being, or a soul, who incarnates on the earth many times in order to further evolve toward higher states of awareness.

During our long evolutionary path of many incarnations, we have accumulated a wealth of wisdom, and have made many good choices that benefit us in future lifetimes. We have also made mistakes, and have sometimes abused the gifts we have been given. To rectify such errors, we may take on an additional burden in order to learn a particular lesson that we failed to learn in previous lifetimes. In Numerology, this burden is called a Karmic Debt.

The numbers that indicate a Karmic Debt are 13, 14, 16 and 19. These double-digit numbers take on great significance when they are found in the core numbers of Numerology (the most important numbers, including the Life Path, Expression, Heart's Desire (or Soul Urge), Personality and Birth Day), and in the various cycles during the course of your lifetime. Each has its own unique characteristics, and its own particular difficulties.

When you are calculating your Numerology chart -- especially your core numbers and different cycles -- you may encounter the numbers 1, 4, 5 or 7. These single-digit numbers can be arrived at by adding a variety of two-digit numbers. For example, the number 1 can be derived by combining the double-digit numbers of 10 (1 + 0 = 1), 19, 28, 37, 46 -- all of which total to 10, and then reduce to 1. However, only in the case of 19 is a Karmic Debt indicated. Karmic Debts are also associated with the numbers 4, 5 and 7. These numbers can be preceded by an array of two-digit numbers, but when the 4 is preceded by a 13, the 5 is preceded by a 14 or the 7 by a 16, a Karmic Debt is also read as part of the single-digit interpretation.

A Karmic Debt can be found in different places in a Numerology chart. As a result of totals based on your date of birth, for instance, or calculations based on the letters of your name. This means that two people with a 16 Karmic Debt that is located in different places in their charts express it very differently.

What follows is a description of the four Karmic Debt numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19.

13

Those with the 13 Karmic Debt will work very hard to accomplish any task. Obstacles stand in their way and must be overcome time and time again. One may often feel burdened and frustrated by the seeming futility of one's efforts -- there may be a desire to surrender to the difficulties and simply give up on the goal, believing it was impossible to attain in the first place. Some with the 13 Karmic Debt fall into laziness and negativity, but efforts are not futile, and success is well within reach. One simply must work hard and persevere in order to reach the goal. Many highly successful people in all walks of life, including business, art and athletics, have a 13 Karmic Debt.

The key to succeeding with the 13 is focus. Very often, people with the 13 Karmic Debt do not concentrate or direct their energies in one specific direction or on a single task, but scatter their energies over many projects and jobs, none of which amount to very much. A temptation with the 13 is to take shortcuts for quick success. Too often, that easy success doesn't come, causing regret and the desire to give up. The result is a poor self-image and the belief that one is incapable of amounting to very much.

In order to focus, you must maintain order in your life. Order is essential to success. You must maintain a schedule, keep appointments and follow through. Keep your environment neat and under control and never procrastinate. If you sustain a steady and consistent effort, you will realize much reward.

14

The 14 Karmic Debt arises from previous lifetimes during which human freedom has been abused. Those with a 14 Karmic Debt in their Numerology chart are forced to adapt to ever-changing circumstances and unexpected occurrences. There is an acute danger of falling victim to abuse of drugs, alcohol and overindulgence in sensual pleasures such as food and sex. You must put the reins on yourself. Modesty in all affairs is crucial to overcoming this Karmic Debt.

Also important is the need to maintain order in life and to establish one's own emotional stability. You must be willing to adapt to the unexpected occurrences of life, all the while maintaining your focus on your goals and dreams. Flexibility and adaptability are at the very core of this struggle.

Orderliness in one's immediate environment is crucial to maintaining clarity and focus. Mental and emotional stability must be attained in order to avoid being thrown about by the changing fortunes in the external environment.

But the key to the 14 Karmic Debt is commitment. Life will resemble a rollercoaster ride, but it will always travel in the right direction if one's heart is set on what is true and good. Set yourself a high goal, maintain order wherever possible in your life, avoid excessive sensory indulgence and maintain faith. Above all, do not give up on your dreams and goals.

Those with the 14 Karmic Debt can experience life to the fullest -- as long as they maintain a high dream, they will achieve success and great spiritual development.

16

The 16 Karmic Debt -- wherever it shows up on the Numerology chart -- means destruction of the old and birth of the new. The 16 is about the fall of the ego and all that it has built for itself. It is a watershed, a cleansing. All that has been constructed and all that serves to separate the person from the source of life is destroyed. Through the 16, reunion with the great spirit is accomplished.

This can be a painful process, because it usually comes after much ego inflation, resulting in a struggle between the ego and the divine will. Life presents challenges to your grand plans, which can be resented and struggled against. It is a lost battle and you will likely feel humbled in the face of the collapse that follows. This humility is the key to later success, however, because you will learn to follow the intimations of a higher reality. In the destruction of the old, a spiritual rebirth takes place with an entirely new awareness. This rebirth affects every area of your life. It is a life much the better for the fall.

Those with the 16 Karmic Debt must be careful of egoism. Very often, those with the 16 use their highly intuitive and refined intellect to look down upon others, and view the rest of the world as inferior. This causes acute alienation and loneliness. In addition, it invites retribution, for the egoist is humbled more harshly than any other.

When the 16 is in one of the core numbers, this process of destruction and rebirth is a continual cycle that actually serves to bring you into higher consciousness and closer union with the source of life.

The 16 Karmic Debt can be a path of progress and great spiritual growth if it is looked at properly.

19

The person with the 19 Karmic Debt will learn independence and the proper use of power. You will be forced to stand up for yourself, and often be left standing alone. Difficulties will be faced and overcome through personal struggle.

One of the central lessons for people with the 19 Karmic Debt is that you stubbornly resist help. Much of your independence is self-imposed -- you simply don't want to listen to others, or to accept the help or advice of others.

The 19 Karmic Debt can become a self-imposed prison if you do not open up to the reality of interdependence and the mutual need for love.

The most important lesson for the 19 Karmic Debt is: while you seek to stand on your own feet, you are still a human being, deeply connected with others and in need of the support, assistance and human understanding that all people need. Those with the 19 Karmic Debt will learn the hard way that "no man is an island," and that we are, indeed, "all bits of the main!"

Master Numbers in Numerology

In Numerology, there are three numbers to pay attention to in particular: the Master Numbers. These are the numbers 11, 22 and 33 -- better known as the Master numbers.

What makes them so "masterful?" They have profoundly powerful meanings and are considered "highly charged" -- that means when they appear in your chart, they hint at difficulty. They give you insight into obstacles by calling upon your patience and maturity -- and a lot of effort -- to peacefully integrate these elements into your personality.

11

First, the number 11 represents instinct. It is your connection to your subconscious, to gut feeling and knowledge without rationality. Because the number 11 has all the qualities of 2, the negative points of the number -- anxiety, shyness, stressed energy -- is balanced out by the 2 qualities of charisma and divine inspiration. 11 is the dichotomy number, meaning it is both extremely conflicted and also a catalyst for other numbers.

The danger of 11 is that it needs to be focused on a very specific, concrete goal ... because if you have 11 in your chart and it isn't attached to a specific project, you will most likely experience anxiety and fear. It's extremely powerful and capable of great things, but can also be extremely self-sabotaging when not used correctly.

If you have Master Number 11 in your chart, tap into it and use it to create personal power and spiritual evolution. Do not deny your instincts, and let your inner, guiding voice push you toward a great goal. This is a number of faith, and very much associated with psychics, clairvoyants and prophets.

22

Master Number 22 holds the greatest amount of power (earning it the nickname "the Master Builder"). 22 is a pragmatic number, a doer, capable of spinning dreams into concrete reality. Those who have 22 in their chart have great potential for success -- that's because it has all the insight and intuition of the number 11, paired with a grounded and scientific approach associated with the number 4. 22 is an ambitious but disciplined number.

22 represents lofty goals brought down to earth and made into something you can touch. It also has leadership and confidence. Unfortunately, not everyone with a 22 in their chart is practical -- this is symbolized by the brilliant person you might know who doesn't "live up to" their potential. This is the danger of both 11 and 22 -- though both are capable of greatness, they can shy away from great opportunities or apply too much pressure to themselves.

If you have 22 in your chart, ease up and realize your limitless opportunities. Turn down the pressure-cooker and realize your shot at serving the world in an effective and practical way.

33

Meanwhile, 33 is the mover and shaker of the Master Numbers (earning it the nickname "Master Teacher"). With 11 and 22 combined in this Master Number, intuition and dreams reach an entirely new orbit. A 33 used to its full potential means that there is no personal agenda, only a focus on humanitarian issues. Someone with 33 strongly featured in their chart has the ability to throw themselves into a project that is more than practical -- it can even be spiritual.

The number 33 also represents full understanding before communication. That means that with 33 in your chart, a person is probably highly knowledgeable, but also fact-checks before preaching ideas or ideals.

This number in full efficiency is a sight to behold. But this is rare. Master Number 33 is only significant if it's one of your "core" numbers -- Life Path, Heart's Desire, Personal Expression, Personality or Maturity. Otherwise, Numerology experts look at 33 as simply 6 (or 33/6, still weakening its power and downgrading it from a Master Number).

But a Master Number of 33 is also rare because of the very technical way it's calculated. A Life Path Number of 33 means that the three units of a person's birth date -- the month, the year and the day -- all add to 11, or the birth year adds to 22 (and if you were born in the 20th century, there are only 7 years that add to 22) so that the month and day of birth combined equal 11. Then, the day of birth must be 22, with the month and year of birth at a total of 11.

As you can imagine, this is an extremely rare occurrence.

Numerology experts pay special attention to Master Numbers, and you should too. The best way to consider them? That 11, 22 and 33 are a triangle of enlightenment.

The Meaning of Double-Digit Numbers in Numerology

In Numerology, your name and birth information tell you which numbers dominate your life. These numbers can tell you a lot about your own personality -- and your own future. But there are two kinds of numbers: single-digit or double-digit. To go deeper into your own numero-identity, it is important to look at both.

In the study of numbers, it is easy enough to figure out what numbers 1 through 9 mean. They are often the result of double-digit numbers added together to make a single-digit numbers. In Numerology, 26 can more easily be understood as 8, for example. But an 8 that comes from 2 and 6 has 2 and 6 characteristics, while an 8 that comes from 1 and 7 has 1 and 7 characteristics -- this means that although the number 8 can describe broad personaliy traits, there are different kinds of 8s. Because of this, many Numerology experts will write out single digit numbers by including which double-digit numbers they come from, like this: 25/7, 34/7, etc.

So let's focus on the double-digits numbers themselves. They are overshadowed by the single digit that they add to. So you may hear that the number 7 represents someone who is withdrawn, but someone who is a 7 because they have a 25 in their chart is less withdrawn than soeone who has a 7 because they have a 16 in their chart.

What is Numerology?

Let's face it: this is a world of chain stores, fast-food joints and a global culture. There is nothing wrong with this, but it is important to be in touch with the special qualities and talents that are uniquely yours.

Numerology is a study of the numbers in your life. It is based on the idea that the entire universe is a system, one that mathematically breaks down into basic elements -- numbers. When we consider Numerology, we are considering whether there is logic to lief or if everything happens randomly and with no purpose whatsoever.

The argument for Numerology is that there is, in fact, some order to our universe -- consider the stars, planets and galaxies. Consider physics. This is all proof that life and events are not all random. For these reasons, it makes sense that our personalities and life paths can be broken down into comprehensible meaning -- numbers. And these numbers can help us better understand ourselves and our worlds, both internal and external.

Need more proof? Quantum physicist Fritjof Capra wrote "The Tao of Physics", in which he notes that a unity between all physical events in the universe.

Keep in mind that most names and words give out their own impression -- the word "storm" is intense in any language. The word "power" is motivating and positive, and the act of saying it requires a biting movement of the jaw. Saying the word "love" creates a harmonious sound.

How does this relate to Numerology? Numerology experts argue that we all have the perfect name -- the sound fits our personality and reflects our inner selves. With this harmony in place, our names break down into numbers that say volumes about who we truly are.

So consider the ancient study of Numerology as its own kind of spiritual science. It is like Astrology in that it can help us figure out more about our inner selves. In Numerology, each letter in your name is associated with a number value. When you add up all of these numbers, you get a final number. Adding the digits of this final number together (E.g 23 is 2 + 3, so 5) you get a single digit that gives you extremely personal insight.

Some wonder how this could be, because it seems like our names are given to us in such random ways and for a variety of reasons -- how can our names and dates of birth accurately reflect who we are? Numerology experts argue that names actually reflect the deeper character of the thing (or creature) we are naming. Naming, in this way, is intuitive, so the meaning around numbers is not arbitrary.

Let's use "Love" as an example. Assign a number to each letter, depending on the order it falls in the alphabet (so L=12, O=15, V=22 and E=5). With L, 1+2=3; for O, 1+5=6, and so on. When you add these four single digits together, you get 18, and 1+8=9. This is our final number for Love, and 9 represents generosity, self-sacrifice and concern. These are Love's specific characteristic, wouldn't you agree?

Then, by analyzing your birth name and birth date, Numerology can tell you about your life path, hidden passions, heart's desire and more! Numerology forecasts can also identify future trends in your life. How? In part, because when you look at your own personal numbers, you are looking at the significance of the year you were born in relation to who you are.

Numerology looks at three things about you: your moment of birth, the name your parents gave you and the name you use (whether you go by a nickname, had a name change or got married). Because this information is readily available to most people, Numerology is an easy (and fascinating) way to find out what makes each of us unique, what our destiny holds, how you get along with others and what to expect in the future.

From this information, we get a lot of different numbers -- your Life Path Number, which tells you more about the path you are travelling; your Birthday Number, which hints at your specific talents; your Expression Number, which gives you insight into your personal goals and desires; your Heart's Desire Number, which reveals the inner you; your Personality Number, which is all about your attitude and reputation; your Maturity Number, which indicates your level of self-awareness; your Balance Number, which guides you on how to conduct yourself in the face of adversity; your Challenge Numbers, which clue you into your own personal obstacles -- and more!

All of these give us a fuller picture of ourselves and others -- using math and the subtle power of numbers.
